Renovation projects bolster March building numbers

A couple of large renovation permits bolstered building activity in Sarnia in March.

City hall issued 48 permits with a total value of almost $8.3 million.

Included was a nearly $2.4 million renovation of the former Dow Recreation Centre at 1569 Wellington St.

Engineering firm Langtree Controls is setting up its new headquarters in the 20,000 square foot facility east of Modeland Road.

A $1.3 million permit was issued last month for renovations to the Bank of Montreal at 435 Exmouth St.

BMO is closing its branch on Christina Street and moving its main office operations to Exmouth Street effective June 21, 2019.

Through the first quarter of 2019 city building permits total $13.3 million compared to $15.2 million in 2018.

Residential construction is far behind last year's pace.

Three permits were issued for single-family homes in March for a total of just four compared to 23 last year at this time.
