Civilians help police arrest fleeing driver

Civilians helped Sarnia police arrest a 41-year-old man who allegedly ran from the scene of a crash Tuesday afternoon.

Constable John Sottosanti said officers responded to Pontiac Drive and London Road at about 2:50 p.m.

After a collision caused by a vehicle running a red light, police said a driver fled on foot to the plaza north of the intersection with a witness and bystanders giving chase.

The civilians were able to hold the man until officers arrived but the suspect struggled to get away from police, even while in handcuffs and resisted being put in the back of a cruiser.

Due to the suspect's erratic behaviour and the possibility of injuries from the crash, he was taken to hospital for assessment.

The investigation was continuing.
