In advance of the first unofficial weekend of summer, the Ontario Provincial Police are raising awareness about the factors that lead to the deaths of motorcyclists, off-roaders, and boaters.
The force says the 36 motorcycle deaths in 2018 were mainly the result of driving too fast for the conditions, excessive speed, and alcohol impairment.
Not wearing a helmet was a factor in more than half of the 19 off-road vehicle driver deaths.
On the water, the OPP said 22 of the 24 people who died in boating and paddling incidents last year were not wearing a life jacket.
Alcohol and drugs also played a part in many of the off-road and boating fatalities.
Safe Boating Awareness Week starts on Saturday.
