Operation Corridor targets transport trucks

Lambton OPP and the Ministry of Transportation are teaming up to crack down on unsafe transport trucks.

Operation Corridor runs Thursday and Friday, with the focus on commercial vehicles.

OPP Media Relations Co-Ordinator Derek Rogers said 40 per cent of truck crashes in 2018 involved a trucker making an improper lane change or following too closely.

"When you have vehicles that are this big and this heavy, certainly when things go wrong they tend to do so in a large way," said Rogers. "When there's a crash involving a commercial motor vehicle, we know that people get hurt and typically there are multiple vehicles involved in these crashes. So, this makes it a really significant road safety issue."

The OPP reported 7,674 transport crashes last year, with 63 lives lost and 1,142 of those resulting in injuries.

Nearly 75 per cent of people killed in these crashes were passengers in other vehicles.
