Drivers urged to slow down, watch for children

Drivers are reminded to stay alert now that school's out for summer break.

Sarnia police Cst. Nelson Amaral said drivers should use extra care, particularly when travelling near parks, swimming pools and other recreational areas.

"We want everyone to just be conscious of that," said Amaral. "There's going to be extra foot traffic, extra bike traffic. Just be patient and be careful, a lot of kids don't know the rules."

Ontario Provincial Police are also asking parents to go over safety guidelines with their children, such as how to safely walk along roadsides and crossing streets only at corners or properly-marked crosswalks.

If your kids ride their bikes, helmets are the law for everyone under 18, so make sure they wear them.
