Imperials confident heading into playoff opener

The Sarnia Imperials host the Oakville Longhorns in the opening game of the Northern Football Conference playoffs on Saturday.

Sarnia finished the season atop the West Division with a 6-2 record, including a 41-0 win over Oakville last weekend.

The Imperials only two losses came against the powerhouse GTA All-Stars.

Head Coach Jake Cherski is optimistic about the team's chances heading into the weekend.

"Obviously you never take any team lightly, but it should be a pretty easy game for us," said Cherski. "It should allow a lot of our depth players to get a chance to play in a playoff game, and that will give us experience down the road."

Cherski encouraged fans to come out and show their support.

"We encourage everyone to bring anything that it takes to make noise," he said. "Whether it's bells, bucket lids, or garbage cans we don't care. We just want to have the rowdiest fans like we've always had. Since our inception back in 2006, we've been known throughout the league to have some of the best fans in the league. We want to keep that tradition going."

The Imperials will be relying heavily on Quarterback Julian Shadd-Gentry who passed for a league-leading 2,086 yards and 20 touchdowns.

He also rushed for 366 yards which was the fourth-most in the league.

Joshua Wright led the league with 10 receiving touchdowns and was third in receiving yards with 588.

Tyler Storie was tops in the league with 861 receiving yards and had nine receiving touchdowns, and four interceptions.

Other key players include Cody Burt who had three fumble recoveries and three sacks, Tyler Whatley who had five sacks, and Ray McDonald who caught five interceptions.

Saturday night's game is at 7 p.m. at Norm Perry Park, admission is $10.
