Habitat renovations address affordable housing need (GALLERY)

Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton has helped another family pursue affordable homeownership.

Anne LaForge is the new owner of 601 Elm Ave., a newly renovated home just off East Street, south of London Road, in Sarnia.

She'll be living in the home with her seven-year-old granddaughter, Liegha, a Grade 2 student at Hanna Memorial.

"It's exciting," said LaForge. "It's stability for my granddaughter. That's what I was looking for."

LaForge completed 500 volunteer hours working on the home before assuming ownership at a ceremony on Thursday.

"When I came in it was completely gutted and we redid the whole house," she said. "Everything is brand new."

Habitat CEO David Waters said renovation is another way to make affordable housing a real possibility for those needing it the most.

"I think with the increasing price of lots and housing in the community, we've had to find other ways to house families affordably," said Waters. "So, one of the things we've had to do in the last couple of years was find houses, that we can purchase at a reasonable cost, and we renovate from the studs up and create a brand new home."

Waters said Habitat is renovating another home on Bright Street in Sarnia, and a new build is underway on Murray Street in Corunna.
