Dementia registration at police headquarters Saturday

Sarnia police are again partnering with the Alzheimer's Society of Sarnia-Lambton to register more loved ones living with dementia.

Registration will take place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, October 26 at Sarnia police headquarters at 555 Christina St. N.

Constable John Sottosanti said three out of five people living with dementia will go missing at some point in their journey with the disease and if they're not found within 24 hours, half of them will have a serious injury or die.

"Caregivers are asked to bring a photo of their loved one, along with proper identification and health information," said Sottosanti.

He said they've realized over the years, if they don't have the information beforehand it's much more difficult for officers.

"It makes it much more difficult for us to get the process rolling, putting out photos of the missing person, getting out descriptors of the missing person and plus it's taxing on the family when we show up at their residence and start asking all these questions. They're going to be confused, they're going to be distraught and so we're hoping that this will take some of that extra work away to make it more effective for police to locate the missing individual."
