Highway 40 widening raised at Ontario budget consultation

The mayor of St. Clair Township has made another push for funding for the long-called-for widening of Highway 40.

Steve Arnold raised concerns with the parliamentary assistant to Ontario's finance minister during a community budget consultation at the Royal Canadian Legion on Front Street Wednesday afternoon.

"The 7.7 kilometres that aren't completed as four lanes yet really stymies my community," said Arnold. "We do hazardous waste, lot of industrial stuff and lots of traffic and that's one of the barriers for people coming to my community and other communities in Lambton County. If we can have that finished up, that would be wonderful."

Arnold said it's time.

"I've been doing this since 1985 and it [the highway] was old then. They said they were doing an ECA [Environmental Compliance Approval] on it, and that's been ongoing now for at least a decade."

Stan Cho is visiting communities throughout the province in advance of Ontario's 2020 budget.

Cho said budget ideas can also be submitted at Ontario.ca/budgetideas until February 11.
