City police hosting dementia registration again Saturday

The Alzheimer's Society of Sarnia-Lambton is partnering with Sarnia police again to register more loved ones living with dementia.

Spokesperson Marie Marcy-Smids said they'll be registering individuals Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at police headquarters, at 555 Christina St. N.

"There are over 3,000 people in Sarnia-Lambton living with some form of dementia," said Marcy-Smids. "So, out of those numbers, three out of every five will go missing at some point in their dementia journey."

Marcy-Smids said the registration isn't just for people with Alzheimer's or dementia.

"If they're at risk for any kind of health issue that they could go wandering, it's best to get them registered before an incident happens. We had a case last week where our staff were encouraging a family to get an individual registered and they said, 'oh, well, they haven't gone missing,' and sure enough, on Monday they came in and guess what happened, they went missing on the weekend."

She said luckily that individual was found, but when individuals aren't found within 24 hours, half of them will have a serious injury or die.

Caregivers are asked to bring a recent photo of their loved one, along with proper identification and health information.
