Strong northwesterlies battering Lake Huron shore again

Temperatures are more than 10 degrees below normal in Sarnia-Lambton with the return of cold Arctic air on gusty northwest winds.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Tuesday, warning of strong wind gusts of 70 kilometres an hour or more in the wake of a sharp cold front that blasted across the region in the early morning hours.

The weather agency said the winds are strong enough to cause isolated power outages.

Both the St. Clair region and Ausable Bayfield conservation authorities also issued statements.

The Lake Huron shoreline is being subjected to more wind-driven wave action with possible erosion and minor flooding, particularly in the Old Lakeshore Road area of Bright's Grove.

The St. Clair region authority also said winds from a westerly direction are expected to cause a backwater effect in the Wallaceburg area, slowing the flow of water out of the Sydenham River and contributing to elevated water levels. Residents in the area may experience minor flooding.

Environment Canada said the winds will slowly diminish Tuesday evening.

The normal high for this time of year in Sarnia is 15 C, 59 F. A high of 4 C, 39 F, was forecast for Tuesday.
