Sarnia-Lambton's Conservative MP has fired back in response to the Trudeau government's assault-style gun ban.
Marilyn Gladu said she is opposed to bans because they are arbitrary and will not address the fundamental problem.
She doesn't agree with the prime minister's argument that a ban is justified in response to numerous mass shootings, from Ecole Polytechnique in 1989 to the recent killings in Nova Scotia.
Gladu said 95% of gun crimes happen with illegal guns or guns used illegally, like the Nova Scotia shootings.
"Trudeau is trying to use these crimes to justify these bans," Gladu said in an email to BlackburnNews.com. "Criminals don’t obey the existing rules, and additional bans will not fix the problems of criminals and gun crimes."
Gladu said those problems are not related to lawful gun owners.
"It is related to illegal guns being brought into the country by criminals, and guns used illegally. We need a fulsome strategy, as the Conservatives have outlined, to combat illegal guns and gangs," she said.
The federal order announced Friday has a two-year amnesty period for current owners, and there will be a compensation program.
