To ensure the health and safety of its members are protected, Aamjiwnaang First Nation has announced it will be postponing its general election scheduled for this summer.
The chief and council announced on Monday that they will be postponing the election on July 23, 2020 until January 23, 2021 to limit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"With this extension, given the restrictions on public gatherings continue to loosen and we get back to normalcy, an election can be called once the guidelines allow us to do so," the council and chief said in a statement posted to the First Nation's administration Facebook page.
The statement went on to say the postponement will also ensure the community is granted its standard preliminary 79-day election process.
The chief and council also noted in their decision that a number of other First Nations in Canada have requested to postpone their elections, as well.
