Impaired driving charge laid after van snaps pole

A 32-year-old Chatham man faces charges after a van slammed into a hydro pole in Sarnia Wednesday evening.

Sarnia police said the pole was snapped in the crash that happened at around 7:30 p.m. in the area of Telfer Road and London Road.

Police said the driver got out of the vehicle and allegedly began to leave the area, but witnesses were able to detain him until officers arrived.

After being taken to hospital for observation and released with minor injuries, the man was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, possession of methamphetamine, driving while under suspension, and failing to remain.

He was released and will appear in court at a later date.
