Residents from a nearby three-storey residential complex were allowed to return home following a natural gas leak in the area of Old Exmouth Street near Lambton Mall Wednesday afternoon.
The residents were displaced in the extreme afternoon heat and humidity as a precaution, but for a relatively short time.
Sarnia police initially reported the incident just before 2 p.m. About an hour later, Cst. John Sottosanti said roads had reopened and evacuated residents were returning to their homes.
Cst. Sottosanti said some minor property damage had occurred but there were no injuries.
Sarnia fire officials reported that there had been a gas line explosion but the situation was under control.
Fire service spokesman Mike Otis said some flames ignited when an underground line was hit.
