UPDATE: Sarnia police, crisis nurse help distressed man on 402 overpass

There was a coordinated effort to ensure an individual received the care they needed Friday morning.

Sarnia police responded just after 4 a.m. to a call from a passerby that a male was present on the Highway 402 Airport Road overpass.

The call came in two hours after officers were dispatched to locate a male to check on his wellbeing.

Once on scene, officers realized the situation was volatile and called their negotiators and an on-call Mental Health Engagement and Response Team (MHEART) nurse.

Cst. John Sottosanti said Lambton OPP helped close the 402 in both directions between Mandaumin and Modeland Roads and city police closed Airport Road between the Chris Hadfield Airport and London Line temporarily.

"Over two hours later, at approximately  6:50 a.m., individuals involved were able to convince the male to remove himself from the incident and into their care," said Sottosanti. "The male was taken to hospital where he remains."

Highway 402 and other affected roads were reopened to traffic by 7 a.m.

Police are thanking everyone involved for helping the incident come to a peaceful conclusion.
