Youth charged in assault of elderly man

A Sarnia youth is facing assault charges following an unprovoked attack on a 77-year-old man at Ferry Dock Hill on Monday evening.

At around 5 p.m., Sarnia police said the man was sitting on a bench at the top of the hill drinking his coffee. As a group of teens walked by him, one of them slapped him on the head for no reason.

Police said the victim got into his vehicle and drove down the hill to speak to the youth. He rolled down his window and was punched several times.

The man after he got out of his car and was again repeatedly punched until he lost consciousness and fell to the ground. Once he regained consciousness, he was able to get himself home and then to the hospital.

A young offender, who is under the age of 16, has since been arrested and charged with assault and assault causing bodily harm. He remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

The suspect can not be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
