Spike in weapons seizures at Michigan ports of entry

There's been a significant spike in the seizure of weapons and ammo at Michigan's ports of entry since the pandemic.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said from March 21 to August 21, its Detroit Field Office has seized 81 firearms and over 4,000 rounds of ammunition.

During the entire 2019 fiscal year officers seized 62 firearms.

“Of the firearms seized, CBP officers intercepted 58 pistols, 12 revolvers, seven rifles, and four shotguns,” said Director of Field Operations Christopher Perry. “The men and women of CBP remain diligent in protecting our communities from illicit firearms and other dangerous contraband attempting to exploit our borders.”

Ports of entry in Michigan include the Blue Water Bridge, The Ambassador Bridge, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, Detroit Metropolitan Airport, and the International Bridge at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Since late March the border has been open for essential travel and trade only, due to COVID-19.

The Detroit Field Office reported previously that it has also seen an increase in the seizure of narcotics. Since March, over 5,500 pounds of marijuana have been confiscated at state border crossings including a large seizure at the Blue Water Bridge in August.
