Careless smoking cause of fatal Davis Street fire

Sarnia Fire and Rescue says one person died in a house fire on Davis Street Saturday morning.

Fifteen firefighters from three stations responded to the 400 block near Russell Street at around 9 a.m. after a 9-1-1 caller reported seeing smoke and flames.

Public Education Officer Mike Otis said the cause was determined to be careless smoking, and there were no working smoke alarms in the home.

"Smoke alarms are very crucial to surviving a fire, especially at night when you're most vulnerable," said Otis. "Over two-thirds of fire fatalities are people without working smoke alarms."

Damage was estimated at around $120,000.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office is investigating, as they do with any fatal fire.
