Bluewater Power warns familiar scam has resurfaced

Bluewater Power says it will never ask for your account information over the phone.

The message comes with the resurfacing of a familiar scam, mainly targeting the utility's business customers.

CEO Janice McMichael-Dennis said they already have their customers' information on file, and adds scammers are trying to use urgency to get money.

"They're claiming to need immediate payment, either in the form of Bitcoin or gift cards and basically demanding immediate payment or a disconnection of hydro," said McMichael-Dennis. "Of course, Bluewater Power will not call you and ask to be paid in Bitcoin or ask you to put money in certain account numbers."

McMichael-Dennis said the callers are even guessing the amount of someone's bill to make it seem more legitimate.

She said if you receive a suspicious call, contact Bluewater Power at 519-337-8201 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
