White Christmas in Sarnia all but certain

Prospects for a white Christmas in Sarnia this year have gone from iffy to excellent.

Wednesday's unusually mild conditions will change Thursday as winds become northwesterly and the temperature falls.

Environment Canada meteorologist Peter Kimbell said an approaching low pressure system will spread snow across the region Christmas Eve into Christmas Day.

"Rain tomorrow morning to start, and then it's going to change to the white stuff, and we will have white stuff during the day, maybe two to four centimetres, but more continuing Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as well," said Kimbell. "So yes, it will be a white Christmas, almost certainly."

Kimbell said a special weather statement is in effect for areas to the east and north of Sarnia including London-Middlesex and Huron-Perth.

"The low pressure system is going to create more snow to the east, we're already talking about five to 15 centimetres and probably more than that if you include what will fall on Christmas Day. It's actually possible that we might get up to the 15 centimetre mark even in Sarnia by the time all is said and done on Christmas Day."

Kimbell said strong northwest winds will create blowing snow and snow squalls could set up off Lake Huron Boxing Day.
