Lambton science fair virtual certainty in 2021

The Lambton County Science Fair organizing committee is determined to host a competition in 2021.

Spokesman Peter Smith said the event was cancelled due to COVID-19 this year, so they're following plans for the Canada Wide Science Fair and working to move it online.

"What they're doing is a virtual science fair, where students will be able to send in their projects, the work, make a short video, and so we're really taking the lead from that and trying to recreate the same atmosphere that we get at the science fair, but do it in a virtual way," said Smith.

The competition is open to students in grades 3 to 12, and Smith said they want to give students lots of time to plan for it.

"In the last few years we had about 100 projects and about 130 students taking part, and I think part of our concern is we don't want to lose the students, those that have taken part in the past and enjoyed it, we want to make certain that we can bring them back again and hopefully bring in some more. It's something that, those that take part in, really enjoy. It's going to be a little different, but it can still be fun."

Smith said projects from previous years are posted to their Facebook page.

"Look at what sort of things have worked in the past. Think about the judges, how you're going to explain things to them. What sort of things they'll be looking for that will quickly help them make a decision as to whether this particular project is worthy of a prize or not."

Smith said normally about 100 people help judge the projects, but judging will be more difficult in 2021.

"Submissions would need to be made by April the 5th and then we'll have about a week for judging. The prizes will be announced April 11 at around 6 p.m. and we'll be doing all of this, obviously, online."
