Sarnia nursing/rest home endures second severe outbreak of pandemic

The CEO of Vision Rest Home confirmed Friday afternoon that all residents, but one, have been infected with COVID-19 during the pandemic's second wave.

Heather Martin, in an email to Blackburn News said "the very rapid spread occurred at the onset of this outbreak" that was declared January 13.

She said many residents have been asymptomatic or experienced very mild symptoms.

"Our staff were also hit hard by this virus and are now beginning to return to work," said Martin. "We have assistance from Bluewater Health and a team from Vision Nursing Home that have been incredible at supporting the rest home during this time working extra hours to help with staffing shortages. We have worked hard to increase our staffing roster and are thankful that a number of new staff have recently joined our team."

Martin said two residents were transferred to hospital.

"We are deeply saddened by their passing. Our home is a tight-knit community and our deepest condolences go to the families."

Martin said many residents have recovered and they are beginning to transition the home back to regular services now that heightened precautions can be relaxed.

"The home is undergoing a thorough 'spring clean' with help of an external cleaning company and Bluewater Health staff," she said.

Martin is thanking the families of residents and staff, and community members for their support.

An outbreak at Vision Nursing Home during the first wave of the pandemic last spring lasted nearly two months.

A total of 28 staff and 26 residents at the Wellington Street facility tested positive for the virus and ten people died.
