Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says a 40-year-old man died in a crash near a Sarnia school early Wednesday morning.
At the request of the family the SIU said the man's name is not being released at this time.
It continues to investigate the incident and said a post mortem examination was being conducted Friday morning.
City police said a vehicle northbound on Russell Street allegedly tried to evade police after a traffic offence just after 4 a.m. Wednesday. It slammed into a fence line at Hanna Memorial Public School and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Four SIU investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529, and any video evidence can be uploaded through the SIU website.
The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency that investigates incidents involving police officers where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
