Sarnia basement fire traced to clothes dryer

The cause of a basement fire in Sarnia has been traced to a clothes dryer.

Sarnia Fire and Rescue Services responded with three stations to the 500 block of Christina Street at 12:30 a.m. Friday.

When crews arrived, they could see a visible flame and heavy smoke in the basement of the house.

Firefighters entered the heavy smoke conditions and were able to prevent the fire from spreading by extinguishing it quickly.

Damage was contained to a small area in the basement and is estimated at $20,000.

Public Education Officer Mike Otis said the residents were alerted to the fire by working smoke alarms and were able to exit the home safely.

The city fire service is reminding residents that smoke detectors save lives and it is important to have working smoke alarms on every level of your home.
