Lambton College is launching a pair of virtual learning projects, thanks to a $472,000 grant from the provincial government.
Part of the money will be spent on expanding online course offerings.
Dean of Research and Innovation Mehdi Sheikhzadeh said they've noticed a significant increase in demand since the beginning of the pandemic.
"Last year, we had 4,100 students enrolled in online courses, and that increased to 5,400," said Dr. Sheikhzadeh. "In the same term, we actually launched a small training program called 'e-bits' that we had 11,000 students enrolled in. Also, 600 have registered for our new online micro-credentials."
The funds also support faculty and educators by offering a four module course to prepare them with the skills to transition to online teaching.
The province said it's investing more than $70-million to implement Ontario’s Virtual Learning Strategy, including $21.4-million announced in the 2021 budget.
