Alleged impaired driver sends person to hospital, spits on nurse

A 25-year-old Sarnia man is accused of impaired driving, causing a crash that seriously injured another driver, and spitting on a nurse.

City police were called to a collision at Stuart and Confederation streets at around 6:35 a.m. July 1.  Police say the suspect's vehicle failed to yield before entering the intersection.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 62-year-old, was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The accused was also taken to hospital, where police say he became agitated, non co-operative and spat at one of the nurses that was caring for him.

During the investigation, police formed grounds to request a breath sample from the suspect, but due to circumstances, officers were unable to have the accused comply with providing a sample of breath.

Michael Anthony Whitstone is charged with operation while impaired causing bodily harm, failure or refusal to comply with demand, and assault.

The accused received a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.
