Sarnia's BMC Pharmacy is giving out free Naloxone kits and providing training on how to use them Tuesday.
Director of Pharmacy Marcel Laporte said it's their way to mark International Overdose Awareness Day.
"In the past we've done some barbecue just to bring some attention to something that I think this community is well aware of, and that's obviously the number of overdoses that have occurred in this area is quite large," said Laporte.
He said around 90 per cent of overdoses are accidental.
"A lot of them are actually not just illicit opiates, but prescription ones, and it's a responsible thing to consider to have at least a Naloxone kit on hand if you're taking opioids."
He said using the kit buys a person time.
"They'll reverse the effects of an overdose for 15 to 90 minutes. In actuality with some of the opiates that have been going around, fentanyl in particular and carfentanil, it requires more than one kit to actually reverse it. Nonetheless, it does buy some time for first responders to get there and ultimately get the patient to the hospital."
Laporte said if you can't pop in to their site at 118 Victoria Street on Tuesday, Naloxone kits are available at many pharmacies in Sarnia-Lambton.
