Fire Prevention Week focuses on knowing alarm sounds

It's Fire Prevention Week across Canada, and Sarnia Fire and Rescue is doing its part to make sure residents stay safe.

Fire Life Safety Educator Mike Otis said this year's theme focuses on knowing the difference between the sound of a smoke alarm, CO alarm, or low battery chirp.

"If it's a single chirp, say once a minute, that's usually an indication of a low battery," said Otis. "If you change the battery and it's still going on, then it's time to replace the whole alarm. A smoke alarm will do three long beeps, and a CO alarm alerting will do four short beeps."

Otis said it's the law in Ontario to have working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside of all sleeping areas. There also has to be a working CO alarm on every level with a sleeping area.

Other safety tips include paying close attention to cooking, keeping your chimneys clean, and having a fire escape plan.

We're also reminded that burning leaves is not permitted.

Fire Prevention Week has been marked in Canada since 1923, and falls on the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.
