Project Zero aimed at eliminating CO-related deaths

Sarnia Fire and Rescue has partnered with Enbridge Gas for "Project Zero" in hopes of eliminating fire and carbon monoxide-related deaths in the community.

The service has received 282 combination smoke and CO alarms as part of Enbridge's $500,000 donation to get 16,600 alarms into homes across Ontario.

Fire Life Safety Educator Mike Otis said the devices are key in preventing serious injury and death.

"These fires occur everywhere, including in Sarnia," said Otis. "The biggest thing you can do is have life saving early detection of working CO and smoke alarms."

Otis said the devices will be distributed to those in need across the community.

They want to make sure landlords are doing what they're required to do in terms of ensuring tenant safety.

All homes and apartments in Ontario are required by law to have a CO detector adjacent to all sleeping areas or face a fine of $360 or more.

Carbon monoxide is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America and 500 people a year die from it.
