United Way campaign nearing the 40 per cent mark

There are just eight weeks left to go in the Sarnia-Lambton United Way campaign.

The annual fundraising effort is hoping to raise $1.75 million to help fund 20 local agencies.

Executive Director Dave Brown said they raised $50,000 last week alone.

"After two months of campaigning and we got two more months left to go, we're at $670,000, which represents 38 per cent of our $1.75 million goal," he said.

Brown said so far they've had nearly 1,500 donors contribute to this year's campaign.

"We are lagging behind last year, in fact that gap has got a little bit wider," he said. "Typically the end of October, the beginning of November there's a bit of a lull-time, because you've got the mail that has really come in well in early September, then you've got campaigns that have just kicked off so we're starting to wait for some of those results."

He said the annual Suncor Parking Lot Auction last week raised a record $34,000 for the campaign, which Suncor will match. The St. Clair Catholic District School Board campaign also wrapped up recently with many new donors.
