CAA Worst Roads says Plank example of campaign's success

After taking a hiatus in 2020, the CAA's Worst Roads Campaign is back for another year.

The goal is to highlight streets in need of upgrades or repairs, with the hope of securing senior government funding.

CAA Southwestern Ontario spokesperson Tina Wong said the initiative has been a success locally, leading to money being doled out for a crumbling city road.

"Up to $4.2-million of provincial and federal grant money has been approved for Plank Road between Indian Road South and Highway 40," said Wong. "All of this is part of a larger reconstruction project, set to begin in 2021."

Wong said over the past 17 years, the roads voted worst across the county include Christina Street, Vidal Street South, Tashmoo Avenue, Waterworks Road, St. Clair Parkway, and Blackwell Side Road.

She hopes funding will be allocated for them in the future.

"We know municipalities plan their capital work and repair projects years in advance," she said. "They know these schedules just due to the anticipated life cycle of the pavement materials that they use on their roads. They factor in the wear and tear from vehicle traffic as well as the climatic conditions we have in southern Ontario. Roads are never ignored, but the point of the campaign is to highlight areas that are maybe in extra need of repair."
