Chilly overnight temperatures prompt cold alert

A Cold Weather Alert has been issued by Lambton County's medical officer of health as temperatures are expected to meet the threshold of -15 Celsius, 5 Fahrenheit overnight.

According to Environment Canada's forecast, wind chill values Friday night are also expected to be near -20 C, -4 F.

Residents are advised to dress in layers, and shield exposed areas from the wind. The health unit also recommends limiting time spent outdoors.

"Overexposure to cold can be hazardous and even life-threatening. Hypothermia, which can strike in any season, occurs when the body’s temperature drops below the normal range between 36.1 C and 37.8 C (97 F and 100 F). Symptoms may include pale skin, lethargy, confusion, excessive shivering and hallucinations," read a media release.

The alert will remain in effect until Saturday.

Residents who know someone experiencing homelessness, are asked to contact Lambton County Social Services at 519-344-2062, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. For assistance outside of these hours, contact the Good Shepherd’s Lodge at 519-344-1679.
