Lambton College #1 in Canada for paid student research positions

When it comes to paid student research positions at a medium sized college, Lambton College has received the ranking of number one in Canada.

Vice President of Research and Innovation Mehdi Sheikhzadeh said the ranking, from Research Infosource Inc.'s annual list of Canada's Top 50 Research Colleges, is important.

"The core benefit of doing research for us is to provide the applied learning opportunities to our students," said Sheikhzadeh. "So, being number one means that we have secured resources and partnerships to provide those opportunities."

He said almost nine per cent of the campus population is involved in research programs.

"We are talking about 240 students that are paid to work on real projects with industry. So, if they increase those opportunities that means providing these applied learning opportunities to our students has a direct benefit to their employability later on and the knowledge that they have. So, we are quite happy about this ranking."

Sheikhzadeh said many of the positions are located at the campus or at the Western Sarnia-Lambton Research Park.

"Most of our labs are happening on the main campus, but at the same time, we do have a few labs at the research park and there are also quite a bit of projects that are more IT (information technology) projects and due to COVID, many of these projects are happening remotely so many of those students are working remotely."

The newly released data also ranks the college as number one in the province for research partnerships at a medium-sized college.

Lambton ranked number four in the country for research income.
