Winter storm warning in effect

A winter storm warning has been issued for Sarnia-Lambton as hazardous winter conditions are expected on Thursday.

The warning is in addition to the special weather statement Environment Canada issued Tuesday, advising of a low-pressure system expected to move northeast across Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

Meteorologist Steven Flisfeder said freezing rain, mixed with ice pellets at times, will begin Thursday morning.

"That will be right in that peak rush hour time frame, so it's going to be a tricky commute, with a couple of hours of freezing rain very likely."

Flisfeder said up to five millimetres of ice may accumulate. Snowfall is then expected to begin Thursday afternoon through to Thursday night.

"That snow is going to continue through the day, intensifying through the afternoon rush hour with those heavier snow rates right as people are leaving work and heading home," he said. "It will slowly taper off through the overnight hours."

Upwards of 20 centimetres of snow is possible.

The combination of icy surfaces and blowing snow could create unsafe driving conditions. Environment Canada is advising residents to be careful when walking or driving in affected areas.
