Four corrections staff members are stationed outside of Sarnia's Courthouse, braving temperatures below zero, to raise awareness for homeless youth in the community.
They've been there since 8 a.m. Thursday and plan to remain outside until 8 a.m. Friday.
OPSEU Local 128 President Joel Bissonnette said they're collecting donations for the Ohana Landing youth transitional housing facility.
"I have a friend who has a soft spot for Ohana Landing specifically, and he knows that we do these fundraisers regularly," said Bissonnette. "It was him who asked if I was familiar with what Ohana Landing does and whether we'd be able to do something for them. Before him mentioning it, I honestly wasn't aware of them in Sarnia. Once I found out what they were all about, it was an easy decision to make."
Ohana Landing is located at the former ABC Daycare property on London Road in Sarnia, and is run by Gary and Tammy Vandenheuvel of Preferred Towing.
The facility, which opened in November 2019 after undergoing $1.5 million in renovations, contains three one-bedroom and four two-bedroom units — housing up to 11 youth.
