Sting top Greyhounds 6-5 in OT

The Sarnia Sting are celebrating another at-home win this week after beating Sault Ste. Marie 6-5 in overtime Friday night.

Things started off slow for the Sting after the Greyhounds scored the first two goals of the night.

Ethan Ritchie put Sarnia on the board in the first period with assists by Nolan Burke and Marko Sikic. Ritchie then went on to score another goal in the second period during a power play.

Zach Filak scored two goals Friday night, Ty Voit scored one.

Sikic scored the game-winning goal 1:06 into overtime with assists from Ritchie and Theo Hill.

Sikic has been with the Sting for a couple of months now following a trade with the Guelph Storm in January. He said it has been an easy transition.

"All the guys and coaching staff have been pretty easy going. I've been fitting in pretty well so they make it pretty easy on me to just go out there and play my game," he said during a post-game media conference."

Ritchie said the team believing in themselves played a major role in their comeback after Sault Ste. Marie started off strong.

"A big issue for us this year, I feel, has been playing the full 60 minutes so we knew we were going to eventually figure it out. Just kind of have to give it up for [Sting goalie Anson] Thornton, he was fantastic [Friday night] and really kept us in it in those first ten minutes," said Ritchie. "I think we just kind of found our footing and found our game."

Friday's win comes shortly after the Sting celebrated a 10-6 win over the visiting Saginaw Spirit on Wednesday.

The Sting are back on the ice at Progressive Auto Sale Arena on Sunday to host the Kitchener Rangers. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.

The game can be heard on CHOK (1070 AM/103.9 FM).
