Sarnia police say they had to deal with a combative drunk driver who fell asleep behind the wheel of a running vehicle early Saturday.
Officers were called to a local drinking establishment at around 3:10 a.m. after receiving calls from witnesses about the alleged impaired driver.
When police arrived, the suspect vehicle was running while parked with its turn signal on and windshield wipers activated. A lone occupant, the 27-year-old suspect, was sitting reclined in the driver's seat with his feet on the dashboard.
Police knocked on the passenger window and the suspect woke up and began to fumble around while telling the officers to leave, using profanity. An officer opened the car door and caught a strong whiff of alcohol -- the suspect was also showing signs of impairment.
Police said the man refused the requests of the officers and became hostile. When police went to gain control of the accused, he pushed and grabbed at the officers and began yelling and threatening the officers' family members. The suspect was apprehended and taken to police headquarters where he remained combative.
The accused, a man from British Columbia, is charged with impaired operation, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, resisting a peace officer and assaulting a peace officer.
The accused's first court date is set for later this month.
