The Smith Funeral Home says it is only receiving donations for Ukraine at their site on London Line in Sarnia.
The message comes after a person, allegedly claiming to be with Smith's, canvassed the Corunna area to collect donations on behalf of the funeral home.
Sarnia Police Cst. John Sottosanti has some advice for residents who encounter a door-to-door solicitor.
"If someone does attend your residence and is attempting to either sell something or ask for donations, we do recommend that individuals ask for identification from the person," he said. "If you're not satisfied with that, all you need to do is say 'sorry, no thank you' and close the door if you're not comfortable, or just don't even open the door -- they will go away."
Sottosanti said if the person refuses to leave, call 9-1-1 for assistance.
The Smith Funeral Home started collecting donations for the London Ukrainian Centre late last month -- as of Tuesday, the centre has raised $115,000 and shipped 1,300 boxes of aid for Ukraine.
Sottosanti said for those that want to help, it's best to give to a charity directly.
"And then that way, if someone does come, you can always say 'I've already donated through another means.' You should never feel obliged to have to do something -- I know individuals do, I'm guilty of it myself -- but sometimes you just have to be a little more cautious."
