Canatara Park could see a 'spike' in visitors this summer

Volleyball enthusiasts may soon be able to enjoy a game at new courts at Canatara Park.

On Monday, Sarnia City Council will consider a recommendation by staff to move forward with the installation of beach volleyball courts in the area of the bandshell and beach pavilion, with access to washrooms and parking.

Mayor Mike Bradley said it's a great idea.

"It appears to be a very good recommendation," said Bradley." And, for the first year it would be free for users. It would be asked they go through a permit process, so it's not just people showing up, but on the other hand it's just great to get more activities in that park."

He said a recent public survey, conducted through Speak Up Sarnia, found an overwhelming majority of respondents supported the idea.

"There was high public input and support, this was seen as the best location, and I would agree this is the best location," said Bradley.

During budget deliberations in December, city council approved $150,000 in funding for the project.

Sarnia City Council meets virtually at 10 a.m. Monday.
