Sarnia council wants the province to develop a new system for handling complaints against municipal council members.
Councillor Terry Burrell said municipal councils shouldn't be forced to decide whether or not to deliver a reprimand against one of their own members.
He said having a municipal council involved in the penalty phase switches the procedure from a judicial process to a political action.
Council has asked that the Association of Municipalities of Ontario be asked to support the request.
Burrell first expressed his concerns after council was asked to decide a reprimand after the integrity commissioner determined Councillor Bill Dennis acted inappropriately at a meeting in September.
