A Sarnia man accused of threatening officers with a firearm had to be taken down by a police Taser early Wednesday.
Officers responded to a disturbance on Tashmoo Avenue near Churchill Line shortly after midnight to confirm the welfare of those present.
After several knocks on the door, police were confronted by the suspect who began yelling at the officers and telling them to leave -- a woman was also present. Several minutes later, police decided to leave when they realized that both parties inside the building did not have any injuries and were not being co-operative.
As police returned to their cruisers, the woman came out with her hands up and asked the officers to wait and why they were there, and the man followed behind her.
After police shined a flashlight in the suspect's face, the man went back inside the residence before returning with a firearm in hand that he started waving around in a reckless manner.
Officers immediately took cover, drew their firearms and began yelling at the suspect to drop his weapon. The man ignored the officers demands and started walking towards police. The woman then intervened and pushed the man, knocking the firearm out of his hand and preventing him from picking it back up.
The man continued to be hostile towards police by approaching them and wanting to fight. One of the officers then hit the suspect with a Taser and he was placed under arrest.
The accused, 51-year-old Mark Derek Nahmabin of Sarnia, is charged with possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm and careless use of a firearm.
He was being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
