Concert fundraises for children of Ukraine

A renowned violinist will perform at Imperial Theatre in Sarnia to support children affected by the war in Ukraine.

Vasyl Popadiuk and the Popa Duke Band will perform the "Children of Ukraine" on April 12 at 7:30 p.m. Money raised from the concert will be split between the Regional Children's Hospital in Luhansk, Ukraine, and the Regional Orphanage in Sumy, Ukraine.

"As a Ukrainian, I am honoured to contribute to the most vulnerable part of the population... our children," said Popadiuk in a statement.

Imperial Theatre Executive Director Brian Austin said the concert came together quickly after Popadiuk approached the theatre.

"He found our venue online and he loved the look of it and so he approached us to have this fundraiser," Austin said. "[Popadiuk] has a bunch of tour dates on the west coast of Canada … So the fact that he's coming to Sarnia is fantastic."

Austin said he expects there to be a good turnout.

"I think it will sell really well. It goes to a good cause and the music... he sent us videos of his discography and the music really is beautiful."

Popadiuk plays 15 instruments and has performed at various venues and events, including a feature concert at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. The Imperial Theatre said Popadiuk assembled a five-piece band this past year and recorded his fifth album with them.

Tickets for the concert are $62.50 each and can be purchased online or through the box office at (519) 344-7469.
