Firefighters, SORT members sought in Petrolia

It's welcome news for those looking to enter the field of firefighting.

The Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Department is recruiting for at least eight available positions. They're looking for volunteer firefighters and new members for the Support Operations Response Team (SORT).

Chief Jay Arns said the SORT team plays a crucial role at fire scenes.

"They do on scene operations like rehabilitation, decontamination, SCBA cylinders, and they help with accountability," said Arns. "They do all of the support exterior operations for a big fire scene, hazmat scene or technical rescue scene."

Arns said the vacancies came about due to some retirements and other firefighters moving onto different things.

He said you must be at least 18 years old to apply, have an Ontario secondary school diploma, and be willing to obtain first aid and NFPA certifications.

"For the suppression side we'd like to see trained or experienced firefighters but we also do our in-house training," he said. "We'll certify firefighters within the first year of coming in. For SORT members we've got a varied background right now all the way from laborers to emergency nurses."

Firefighters are required to have a valid DZ driver's licence.

Those interested can apply by email to petrolia@petrolia.ca until 4 p.m. on Friday, April 15.
