Alleged drunk drivers taken off Sarnia roadways

Three people accused of driving while impaired will not be behind the wheel for a while following separate incidents over the weekend.

Sarnia police were called about a traffic complaint in the area of Michigan Avenue and Indian Road Sunday morning, at around 3 a.m.

The driver was allegedly asleep while the vehicle straddled both lanes of the road. Police said the vehicle was in drive, the headlights were on, and loud music was playing. Officers banged on the window in an effort to "wake the driver up" at which point the driver unlocked the rear passenger door to allow officers in.

The driver, a 47-year-old North Bay man, was arrested and taken to police headquarters. Sarnia police said he had over twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood. The accused was charged with one count of operation while impaired by alcohol and one count of having a blood alcohol concentration of 80 plus.

In a separate incident, shortly after midnight Sunday, an officer stopped a vehicle in the area of London Line and Exmouth Street. Police said the vehicle changed lanes while at a red light and stopped in the intersection before driving toward Barclay Drive.

The driver stopped for police, however, officers said the vehicle mounted the curb and then the grass.

A 26-year-old Sarnia man was taken to police headquarters where he allegedly tested twice over the legal limit. He was charged with one count of operation while impaired by alcohol and one count of having a blood alcohol concentration of 80 plus.

On Saturday, a driver was stopped at around 4:25 a.m. after a vehicle drove into Canatara Park and nearly struck the wooden posts along the roadway.

A 21-year-old Sarnia man reportedly failed a roadside test and was arrested for having over 80 milligrams of alcohol in his blood. He was charged with one count of operation while impaired by alcohol and one count of having a blood alcohol concentration of 80 plus.

Police said all three drivers face a 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension and their vehicles were impounded for seven days.
