Virtual quest helps fund camps for kidney patients

A 'quest' to support summer camps for kidney patients will return for a second year.

The Kidney Foundation is holding its second annual Incredible Kidney Quest from June 3 to June 12. The family-friendly virtual scavenger hunt will run through the Eventzee App and will task participants with trivia and photo or video missions.

Participants can compete with others in Ontario to finish each challenge and collect points in order to be entered to win prizes. Prizes will also be available for "best team name" and "most creative team photo."

Sarnia-Lambton Senior Development Coordinator Elaine Hayter said the quest launched in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic and did very well.

"I see that the numbers are a little bit higher than last year," she said. "I think with things opening up a little bit more, the nice spring weather, people able to get out, I think that's been a real positive for the event."

Hayter said about $25,000 was raised during last year's event across Ontario. This year, the foundation would like to top that.

Funds raised this year will support two camp programs that will return this summer after a two-year hiatus.

"We have two camps for kidney patients. One of them is Camp Dorset and that's basically for a kidney patient to be able to go and dialyze and be able to have a week's holiday with their family," said Hayter. "The other one is called Camp Kivita. Camp Kivita is a children's camp for kidney patients."

Both camps are located up north in the Muskoka and Algonquin areas.

The Incredible Kidney Quest costs $30 for single participants, $55 for a duo, and $100 for a group of three or more people.

Participants can complete the quest in one day or do it over the course of several days. Registration details can be found on The Kidney Foundation's website.
