Damage extensive after Esser Crescent fire

A kitchen fire damaged a home significantly in Sarnia's Twin Lakes area Sunday afternoon.

Sarnia Fire and Rescue Services responded to a report of a structure fire in the 600 block of Esser Crescent at around 2:30 p.m.

Chief Fire Prevention Officer Roel Bus said no one was in the home at the time.

"Firefighters arrived and found light brown/grey smoke coming from the roof area and then they found fire at the back of the house as well, which seemed to be originating from the kitchen and it had breached the kitchen, was going up the side of the house and breached the attic as well," said Bus.

Although the fire was brought under control quickly, Bus said damage is estimated at $175,000.

"Damage is extensive because it did create quite a bit of damage in the kitchen and then because it breached outside and reached the exterior."

Bus said it started in the kitchen exhaust hood.

"The origin was pinned to the exhaust hood above the stove," he said. "It definitely was not the stove because there was something put on the stove that didn't burn, so it wasn't that the stove was left on and something got up into the exhaust hood."

No injuries were reported.
