A 62-year-old Toronto man has been charged after 100 kilograms of suspected cocaine was seized at the Blue Water Bridge last month.
A commercial vehicle was referred for secondary inspection in Point Edward on June 21, after Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers discovered concealed suitcases.
A detailed inspection of the suitcases led to the discovery of 100 brick-shaped objects of suspected cocaine.
The driver was arrested and, along with the suspected narcotics, transferred into the custody of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Nick Shah was charged with importation of cocaine and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
"The CBSA and RCMP are Canada's first line of defence, and we're supporting their great work," said Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino in a news release. "This significant seizure exemplifies the crucial role these enforcement agencies play in ensuring public safety. Outstanding work by all involved!"
CBSA District Director, St. Clair District Operations, An Nguyen described the bust as "a solid display of dedication" that officers have to their roles.
"The CBSA and RCMP have an excellent working relationship, which results in the ongoing security at our national borders," Nguyen said. "The diligence in intercepting harmful narcotics, and interrupting smuggling attempts, makes a profound difference in the safety of all within Canada."
RCMP Federal Policing Deputy Commissioner Michael Duheme said the RCMP and CBSA have once again removed harmful drugs from our neighbourhoods, protecting innocent Canadians and ensuring the safety of Canada's borders.
