Lambton farmers push for more 9-1-1 addressing to help first responders

The Lambton Farm Safety Association wants all properties in the county to be identified by 9-1-1 municipal addressing to assist first responders.

Association members Don McCabe and George Dickenson raised the issue of missing or vacant signage during county council's meeting this month.

McCabe said when the 9-1-1 signs were dispersed, they were essentially done to identify buildings, houses and farms that were occupied.

"However, a greater number of farmland in Lambton County has now had houses torn down as time goes on or barns removed. That still does not remove the opportunity though for an accident to occur on that property."

McCabe said a person can't assume that typing an address into Google will give them a nice little map of how to get there. He said the reality is that there is no identification for vacant farmland property.

The association, which is a part of the Lambton Federation of Agriculture, is requesting that municipalities raise the issue with their residents to get the necessary signage.

"Because first responders, such as fire and ambulance, rely on those signs for direct travel to those sites," said McCabe.

Dickenson said the association is also asking for the County Roads Department to continue to monitor the "caution slow moving vehicle" signs that are around and replace them when needed.

"Also if we had a contact to notify if we see any signs that are not in good repair this would help keep them fresh," said Dickenson.

Area farm suppliers have also reported issues locating addresses in Lambton County due to a lack of signage, according to McCabe. He said the association would definitely like to work with the members of county council to see how they could get more signage up.

"Because some of these signs were there, have been taken down or ran over because equipment was too wide or whatever."

McCabe said they only have to look towards a very unfortunate incident in Hastings County which spawned the Emily Project, a program which aims to assign civic addresses to existing access points on both vacant agricultural and rural lands. McCabe said St. Clair Township is the only municipality in Lambton to take on the premise of the project.
