Two arrested following afternoon drug bust

Sarnia police seized nearly $18,000 worth of drugs and cash following a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon.

At around 3 p.m., the service's Vice Unit conducted surveillance of the accused as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged trafficking of cocaine and fentanyl.

Police pulled over a vehicle in the area of Indian Road and Wellington Street and arrested two occupants. Officers searched the vehicle and located 92.16 grams of cocaine, worth roughly $9,216, more than 32 grams of fentanyl with an estimated street value of $4,885, and $3,630 in cash.

As a result, police charged 34-year-old Jeremy Joseph Spinks and 35-year-old Patricia Leanne Carr, both from Sarnia, with two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. Spinks was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for previous matters before the courts.

Cst. John Sottosanti said of concern is that the cocaine and fentanyl, even though in individual bags, were kept together along with the fact that only one scale was located.

"The end result is that an individual that believes they are only using cocaine [may] ingest a sample that is contaminated with fentanyl, even in the smallest amount, but due to their lack of tolerance toward the fentanyl end up in respiratory distress and possibly dead," said Sottosanti.

Both suspects were being held for a bail hearing. Charges against the accused have not been proven in court.
